FORMALS DON'T HAVE TO BE FORMAL.

I specialise in capturing those split second candid moments of joy, excitement and anticipation at weddings. It truly does take all of my concentration to hone in on the atmosphere and spot those situations which make for a special photograph. For this reason, the time in the day set aside for directed shots tends to be short and sweet.

I usually allocate around 20 minutes to photograph the various group shots requested and another 20 minutes to photograph the bride and groom away from the hustle and bustle of the wedding party. I find this length of time to be just right, it keeps things moving along nicely without having the day become all about the photography.

I was guest at a wedding a few years ago where the photographer spent about an hour and a half organising the formal photographs. After an hour, babies were crying and smiles were waning. The setting was beautiful but all the waiting around really affected the celebratory vibe.

Ruth and Adam's wedding was so much fun to photograph. The time set aside for formal shots was basically 20 minutes of play for Ruth, Adam and their friends in the Mailbox shopping centre, Birmingham. As they rode the escalators, posed all over the place and laughed their heads off, it was a real reminder that it's the people involved that make your wedding day special. Click HERE to see more.
